Equities start Nov on a positive note after Oct’s rout

Asia market update: Equities start Nov on a positive note after Oct’s rout; WTI Crude FUTs decline by >2.5% amid focus on Tues’ US midterm elections and diplomatic efforts for Ukraine/Russia and Iran; Markets ignore mixed CN PMI data: JP markets are closed on Tues.

General trends and developments

- Equity FUTs have continued to improve during Asia at the start of Nov after the miserable Oct for tech shares.

- Meanwhile, Crude Oil FUTs have extended losses to start the new month. On the diplomatic front, Iran’s Foreign Min Araqchi stated Tehran has studied US VP Vance's message and discussed it at a high level [comments from Oct 31st]. The US effort to open a broader dialogue with Tehran is a positive step, added Araqchi. Interestingly, the Sultan of Oman has made his first ever visit to China. Both China and Oman have been key players in peace talks related to Iran. Incidentally, China Pres Xi had previously made 4 proposals on maintaining peace in Middle East. The China backed peace proposal for the Middle East was believed ‘echo.’ the effort to end the Ukraine war. With that being said, the WSJ continues to report that efforts are being made regarding the Ukraine/Russia peace process. The US seeks to restore Russia gas sales to Europe via Ukraine, according to recent reporting.

- China’s Oct PMI data was mixed: The official indices both contracted, while the RatingDog manufacturing figure was roughly flat m/m. Overall, the market impact was muted as other previously reported PMI data also came in weaker [including Australia, Euro Zone, US Chicago PMI]. Interestingly the slowdown in China’s official PMIs came as AI-related stocks declined during Oct. AI-related demand was previously cited as one of the bright spots for Chinese data [particularly PMI and Trade Balance]. China was closed for holiday in early Oct [1-7th].

- SoftBank’s [-2.5%] shares remain sensitive to OpenAI’s capital raising developments: OpenAI reportedly slashed its latest funding round target to $20B at a $1.25T valuation, down from aspirations of $30B at a $1.4T valuation [FT article from Oct 31st]. SoftBank is due to report Q2/H1 earnings on Nov 10th:

- Binance commented on deposit outflows after last week’s record hack: Following last week’s record crypto hack, o Sunday Binance noted stabilization, in terms of withdrawal levels. Recall, the co. observed $3.64B in net outflows [~2.1% of total assets] following the hacking incident. The exchange added that it had now covered 95% of the $6.3B of stolen assets.

- BOJ rate hike probabilities declined further after Friday’s Ueda post rate decision press conference: No clear near-term rate hike signal was seen by dealers. Some, also, are pondering if there was government pressure amid the, seeming, gap between the BOJ and government on whether deflation has been actually defeated. Perhaps more details will be revealed when the BOJ next releases its Summary of Opinions [Nov 10th].

- The Japanese press has continued to imply a reluctance by Japan’s PM Takaichi to set a formal annual defense spending to GDP target. The country’s defense budget could hit ¥80T over a 5-year timeframe, according to Sankei. The prior 5-year defense spending plan was estimated at ~¥43T, while the FY2027 Japan defense spending request has been estimated at ¥8.9T.

- Taiwan steps up support for the TWD amid equity outflow concerns: Specifically, the government is said to have increased the daily limit on USD selling by exporters. Previously, state banks were used to restore order in the FX market.

- OIS markets are expecting an RBA rate hike on Tues, implying the courage to move back-to-back: -The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is expected to increase the official cash rate by +25 basis points to 4.85% at its upcoming Board meeting on Tuesday November 3rd. This would mark the fifth interest rate hike in the current tightening cycle, following four interest rate hikes totaling +100 basis points, including the most recent +25bps increase on September 29th.

- Focal points for the RBA decision include whether there will be a split vote, as some central banks have elected to allow prior tightening moves to work through the financial system, before implementing additional tightening. Interestingly, Tues’ RBA decision will come ahead of the US midterm elections, which could bring further uncertainty to markets. As the RBA meets, inflationary pressures persist as evidenced by the Oct Melbourne inflation data, which rose for the 4th straight month. The increase was primarily attributed to recreation and transport price rises, according to analysts.

- The RBA is expected to offer updated economic forecasts on Tues. The August 11th Statement on Monetary Policy (SOMP) cut end-2026 GDP growth forecast to 1.4% (vs. 2.1% prior) and June 2027 forecast to 1.5% (vs. 1.8% prior), while cutting end-2026 trimmed mean CPI inflation to 3.3% (vs. 3.5% prior) and maintaining end-2027 to 2.6%.

- Looking ahead this week (Asian-weighted focus, EST/EDT), key data releases include the Global APAC/EMEA/AMER Oct S&P/ISM/HSBC/RatingDog/HCOB Manufacturing/Services/Composite PMIs throughout the week, AU RBA Interest Rate Decision + Statement on Monday November 2nd, JP 10-Year JGB Auction on Wednesday November 4th, FR 10-Year OAT Auction on Thursday November 5th, and US October Unemployment Rate on Friday November 6th.

- Additionally, Philippine markets will be closed on Monday, while Japan markets will be closed on Tuesday in APAC due to national holidays.

- US equity FUTs +#% to +#% during Asia trading.

AUD/USD bulls seem hesitant below 0.7050 ahead of RBA on Tuesday

AUD/USD reverses an Asian session dip on Monday as renewed optimism over Iran diplomacy boosts investor confidence, keeping a lid on the safe-haven US Dollar and supporting the risk-sensitive Aussie. Spot prices, however, remain below the one-month high, touched last Thursday, as bulls wait for the crucial RBA decision before taking fresh positions.

USD/JPY climbs to 158.00 neighborhood as BoJ uncertainty weighs on the JPY

The USD/JPY pair gains some positive traction at the start of a new week, recovering further from Friday's post-Bank of Japan (BoJ) swing low to sub-157.00 levels. The momentum lifts spot prices to the 158.00 neighborhood during the Asian session and seems unaffected by fresh intervention warning from Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama.

Gold finds relief from Oil’s decline as traders await key US economic data

Gold retains a positive bias during American trading hours on Monday after sliding to a fresh yearly low of $3,870 on Friday and ending October down 6.87%. A pullback in Oil prices amid diplomatic efforts between the US and Iran supports the precious metal. However, the rebound lacks conviction as the fundamental backdrop continues to raise doubts over a sustained recovery.

Dogecoin risks deeper slide as whales diverge

Dogecoin hovers around $0.075 on Monday after falling for the fifth consecutive week since the end of September. Santiment data shows diverging whale activity, as large holders reduce their positions while smaller whale wallets accumulate tokens. Meanwhile, weakening on-chain metrics and a deteriorating technical outlook suggest that DOGE could remain vulnerable to further losses.

Why strong US growth could not stop the bond rally and AI selloff

The US economy grew at a 3.4% annual rate, yet Treasury yields fell and the Nasdaq ended October with its worst monthly performance since March 2025. The market is no longer rewarding capital expenditure simply because it supports growth. Investors are testing whether that expenditure can produce cash flow and returns above the cost of capital.

The 2% inflation target came from a throwaway remark. It now moves trillions
The Federal Reserve's 2% inflation goal grew out of an off-the-cuff remark by a New Zealand politician in 1988. Bond investors still price long-term US debt as if 2% holds, so a change in how the Fed measures inflation would move markets.
