ECB's Holzmann: Rates are at neutral level, no reason to become accommodative

European Central Bank (ECB) policymaker Robert Holzmann, who dissented to the ECB's decision to cut key rates by 25 basis points after the March meeting, argued on Wednesday that they don't need to become more accommodative, per Reuters.

"We had assumed inflation would come down," Hozlmann said. "As we are neutral and inflation is converging to target, there is no reason to become accommodative."

Market reaction

These comments don't seem to be having a noticeable impact on the Euro's performance against its major rivals. At the time of press, EUR/USD was up 0.25% on the day at 1.0820.

Gold hangs near one-week low; looks to FOMC Minutes for fresh impetus

Gold is consolidating just above the $4,850 level, having touched a one-week low on Tuesday, amid mixed cues. Signs of progress in US–Iran talks dent demand for the traditional safe-haven bullion. Meanwhile, rising bets for more Fed rate cuts keep the US Dollar bulls on the defensive and act as a tailwind for the non-yielding yellow metal. Traders also seem reluctant ahead of the FOMC Minutes, which would offer cues about the Fed's rate-cut path and provide some meaningful impetus.
