The world's population has grown to nearly eight billion people today from about two-and-a-half billion individuals in 1950. However, global population growth has slowed markedly over the past few decades, and the United Nations looks for further deceleration in coming years. Furthermore, the demographic outlook differs across major regions of the world. While the number of individuals in Africa will continue to grow at a strong rate over the next few decades, Europe's population is set to decline over that period.
